What Is an ITIN and Why You Need One
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is your gateway to the American financial system — even without a Social Security Number. If you want to build credit, open bank accounts, or access loans in the US, getting an ITIN is the first and most important step.
ITIN vs SSN: What’s the Difference?
| Feature | SSN | ITIN |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Social Security Administration | IRS |
| Format | XXX-XX-XXXX | 9XX-XX-XXXX (starts with 9) |
| Purpose | Work authorization + taxes | Tax filing only |
| Grants work authorization | Yes | No |
| Can build credit | Yes | Yes |
| Accepted by banks | All | Most major banks |
| Can get credit cards | Yes | Yes (select issuers) |
How to Apply for an ITIN
What You Need:
- Form W-7 — ITIN application (download from IRS.gov)
- Tax return — Federal tax return to attach (Form 1040)
- Identity documents — Passport (original or certified copy), or two of: national ID, US driver’s license, birth certificate, foreign voter registration card
3 Ways to Apply:
Option 1: Mail to IRS (Free, Slow)
- Mail Form W-7 + tax return + original documents to IRS ITIN Operation Center in Austin, TX
- Processing: 7-11 weeks
- Risk: original documents are mailed and returned after processing
Option 2: Certified Acceptance Agent (Recommended)
- Find a CAA near you at IRS.gov
- They verify your documents in person — no need to mail originals
- Cost: $50-$300 depending on the agent
- Processing: 7-11 weeks after submission
Option 3: IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center
- Walk-in appointment at an IRS office
- Free, but limited availability
- Bring original documents for in-person verification
After You Get Your ITIN
Once you receive your ITIN letter from the IRS, you can immediately:
- Open a bank account at any ITIN-accepting bank
- Apply for a secured credit card
- Start building credit history
- Apply for a credit builder loan
ITIN Renewal
ITINs expire if not used on a tax return for 3 consecutive years. If yours expired, you can renew it using the same Form W-7 with “Renew” checked.
Pro Tips
- Apply early in tax season (January-March) for faster processing
- Keep a copy of everything you submit
- Use a CAA if you don’t want to mail your passport
- File taxes every year to keep your ITIN active
